I've thought of Dr. Butler's words and the polio-Alzheimer's/iron lung-nursing home comparison often. Not in any way to criticize nursing homes. Rather it's a vivid description of the restricted life for someone with polio confined to an iron lung, and all it means to suffer from Alzheimer's with the physical mental confinement that accompanies it. Definition Alzheimer’s is a deterioration of intellectual functions such as memory, caused by the destruction of brain cells. Dementia is the loss, usually progressive, of cognitive and intellectual functions. Alzheimer’s dementia can be recognized by initial short-term memory loss, which eventually becomes more severe and finally debilitating. Diagnosis before death is based upon clinical findings of unexplained slowly progressive dementia and neuro-imaging studies that show gross cerebral cortex atrophy (changes in the structure of the brain, usually in the form of shrinkage). Neuro-imaging refers to the use of positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or computed topography (CT) scans. These are special types of pictures that allow the brain or other internal body structures to be visualized. Professor Alois Alzheimer of Germany first described the condition is 1907.
